Description
In the training "DAX for Power BI level 3 - intermediate measures and row-level security" you learn how to write, test and maintain more complex DAX measures yourself. In three half-days we discuss design choices, learn to work with other tooling around DAX and secure our data with row-level security

In three half-days we discuss design choices, learn to work with other tooling around DAX and secure our data with row-level security
Audience
The training "DAX for Power BI level 3 - intermediate measures and row-level security" is aimed at data analysts and developers who create and maintain datasets in Power BI themselves.
- You know how to independently develop common measures
- You know how to find smart patterns and how to apply them properly
- You now also want to be able to create more complex measures, and for example really want to understand how CALCULATE works
- You are also curious how you can properly test more complex logic, and how you can effectively remove the errors.
- You want to make smart use of the other tooling that exists around DAX.
Skills gained
After these 4 weeks you can independently develop more complex DAX measures:
- You can build conditional logic (if this, then that) into your measures
- You understand how CALCULATE basically works, and how you can use it smartly and effectively
- You can also call your measures manually outside of Power BI to effectively track down the errors
- You are familiar with some useful tools that live around Power BI, such as DAX Studio
- You understand how to apply simple RLS (row-level-security) in DAX, linked to users or AD groups
Prerequisites to follow the training "DAX for Power BI level 3 - intermediate measures and row-level security".
This training builds on "DAX for Power BI level 2 - smart solutions". It is important that you have a good understanding of the following:
- You know how DAX basically arrives at a result, and you can reason about how that works for your report.
- You can use inactive relationships in your data model within DAX
- You can add and remove filters within DAX
- You can make common *time intelligence* like running totals (YTD, QTD, MTD) and year-over-year comparisons in DAX
- You recognize solution patterns and know how to apply them
It is also important to be able to model your data in a Dimensional Model. As long as your data model is correct, you need much less complex DAX logic in practice.
Finally, as a participant you need access to Power BI Desktop on your own (work) laptop.
Course outline
- Using logic in your measures
- Use CALCULATE and use it well
- Filters, logic and CALCULATE: when to use what?
- Debugging and calling measures with DAX Studio
- Design choices and thinking from your data model
- Set up row-level security
This DAX training is usually given in the form of a learning trajectory : a trajectory in which you follow training for half a day per week for several weeks. You will also receive assignments to work out during the week and to apply in your daily work. This means that you spend about 8 hours per week on this training. Take all questions you encounter to the next training.
Course material
In the DAX for Power BI training we use material that we have developed ourselves at Wortell Smart Learning. We make sure that you receive all the necessary material on time.
